Close, but oh so far away…

The Exchange Team blog today takes a detailed look at one of my favorite new commandlets in the Exchange PowerShell collection, export-mailbox.

With its quality selection of filtering commands (folder, message subject, content, attachment file names, and date range) this will be a good replacement for those "get that email back now!" sort of requests.

I'll even give full marks for making it at least semi-backward compatible by allowing a source mailbox of Exchange 2000, 2003 or 2007. The destination mailbox has to be on 2007.

It stops short of full functionality though by not allowing export to either PST or MSG files. You'll still have to use ExMerge to get that data straight out to PST. Oh, but they are doing us a favor by not blocking older versions of ExMerge.

"…Exchange 2007 will not actively block access from ExMerge clients supported by Exchange 2003. This is not a scenario officially tested but customers have reported that running ExMerge from an Exchange 2003 server and accessing Exchange 2007 databases indeed works."

In their example of litigation purposes, exporting a copy of the messages to another mailbox and then exporting that mailbox content to PST isn't a very elegant solution and introduces a step where information could be modified. ExMerge straight to PST and then securing that file (encrypt, burn to DVD) provides for a much more secure chain of custody.

Yet another example where the grand promises of Exchange 2007 fall short of full delivery. Argh.
